Of course, there will always be those who look only at technique, who ask "how?" while others of a more curious nature will ask "why?" Personally, I have always preferred inspiration to information. -Man Ray

Oldham, England. 1977. Education? University of Manchester How long have you been taking pictures? I have been taking pictures for as long as I can remember. As a child, I used a 50mm 1.4 lens on a Praktica and 35mm film. I have been using digital since 2003. I shoot with a number of different DSLRs and use Sigma EX line professional lenses currently. I set up this website to showcase my work to a larger audience and been selling via the web since 2002. The site has helped me achieve my original objective. I have customers from USA, Singapore, Russia, China, Australia, Canada and UK Do you use any photo-editing software? These days, I mainly use Lightroom. It allows images to be edited quickly and in bulk. Black and white toning, cropping etc. I don't generally do massive amounts of manipulations. I like my photography to look like photography When shooting, how do you work? I tend to shoot fairly slowly. I set my camera to the RAW setting and generally think through the shot before I take it. Waiting for the right light and anticipating it helps. A lot of DSLR cameras today come with a many different settings. I tend to think many of these are gimicks. I shoot mostly in Aperture and Manual modes. This allows you more control of the camera as a tool. What advice would you give to aspiring photographers? Learn the basics. Many cameras today have features that make photographers lazy. Learn how to use your DSLR like an old analogue SLR. i.e Shooting in M, A and S modes. Think through your shots and anticipate them. Think about what effect you are trying to achieve. What lenses do you use and why? As I said, I mainly use Sigma EX lenses. Good glass is fundamental. Typically, I carry 3 lenses. 10-20mm wide angle 28-70 Zoom 70-200 Telephoto These allow me to cover most eventualities. I sometimes shoot with a 30mm 1.4 EX lens when situations such as low light, very shallow depth of field etc present themselves. I have been selling prints via this site for over 5 years. Please see the customer testimonials here. If you have bought prints and wish to leave a comment, please contact me. A little bit about my black and white photography portfolio New York Black and White Photography The prints showcased here are in 4 galleries. I love this city and it really is a photographer's dream. I have spent a lot of time around Central Park feeling drawn to it. The park feels like the lungs of the city. I have a number of Central park photographs in these galleries. There are many other photographs that stand out for me personally as well. The Chrysler building in all its Art Deco splendour must be my favourite New York building, the majesty and palacial feel of Grand Central Station is another one. Paris Black and White Photography If you were given a blank piece of paper and asked to design the perfect city from scratch, Paris would be it. Avenue after avenue of beautiful buildings - it feels impossible to take a bad photograph in this setting. I spent a lot of time around and below Sacre Coeur. The Pigalle area fascinates, with its fading history there visible on the streets. There are four galleries on this site showcasing the whole of Paris from the Eiffel Tower, Places Des Vosges and The Moulin Rouge to Sacre Coeur, Notre Dame and the Parisien Underground.
Hong Kong Black and White Photography Hong Kong draws you in with its vibrancy. After two or three nights in this city, the place seems to pump through your veins. An invigorating, intoxicating mix that leaves you feeling alive and overwhelmed at the same time. However, delve a little deeper than the bright lights of Wan Chai, The Peak or the Star Ferry and the place reveals a deeper side. Places like Stanley Harbour or the lazy beaches of Big Wave Bay, Repulse Bay and Deep Water Bay surprise and soothe. The colonial history is evident throughout Hong Kong and keeps drawing me back. I have two galleries here. A Black and White gallery and one colour gallery.
Venice Black and White Photography Venice is beautiful. From the majesty of St Mark's Square to the simplest detail found in the motifs of the many gondolas, Venice is beautiful. I have two galleries of images from this Italian city. Many of the photographs taken here are from the beginning of the day before the hordes of tourists arrive and swarm everywhere from the Doge's Palace to the Grand Canal. More Black and White Photography I have many more prints showcased. London, Morocco, Singapore and Istanbul are all cities that fascinate in lots of different ways. Please take your time to visit and hopefully enjoy all my black and white galleries.
